Mojo - Ups and Downs

So last week was all about upping my game of presentation, I was happy with what went out to the client and she seemed really happy. Admittedly though, after that was done I kind of lost my mojo as there was, and is, quite a few stressful things going on personally. Stress can have quite a big effect on me, and sometimes not in a good way, as this wasn’t work stress (which makes me more productive). So I ended up faffing on my phone for hours not doing much at all and not really bothering with what I was wearing and reaching for the comfy clothes, which meant that I hadn’t done a lot to promote the business and thought that maybe my proper client was a ‘one hit wonder’. Then randomly on Sunday night, after I’d drunk a few too many G&T’s, I received another enquiry from a referral, hazaar! A lovely lady has been booked in for next week and I can’t wait. It's a massive boost to my confidence and certainly helped with putting things into perspective. I just need to learn to ...

Upping My Game

Been a bit crap this last couple of weeks and not written anything for this blog. My apologies, but I’m back now! So, I’ve done a few wardrobe edits for friends, but last week I had my first ‘proper client’. While it was super exciting, I realised that I needed to up my game with my presentation both before the wardrobe edit and after when I send my recommendations for additional items to complement their wardrobe. I needed to get out of the ‘winging it’ approach, so I did a little more research into how to prep for the edit, getting the client to get rid of definite no’s beforehand, what they need to wear on the day, minimal make up, having a mirror ready etc. Which is great because you are already saving them money by not wasting time getting things ready when you are there. I’m pretty confident with my styling, but I did just have a re-read of my notes on body shapes and what suits/flatters, as well as colour tones. After all I was still a bit nervous about doing this fo...

Life Begins.....

So last week I didn’t even mention that it was my birthday, my 40 th Birthday in fact. To be honest I was so excited about the wardrobe edit I forgot to write about it! Like many people, due to Covid a lot of the original plans had to be cancelled/postponed, including tickets to go and see Alanis Morrisette with a couple of my besties ☹ However, it was a lovely low-key birthday with family and a couple of friends, but I fully intend to make my 41 st epic! I’m not really someone that gets upset about birthday’s or getting older, maybe because mentally I’m still probably about 19 years old! Although I do feel like the cliché of ‘life begins at 40’ because its only now that I’ve taken the decision to do something that I really want and am passionate about as a career. Admittedly it did take for me to lose my job to pluck up the courage to actually take action, that and some wonderful advice from a friend in South Africa (Thank you Terez). I’d contacted her to get some advice ...

My First Wardrobe Edit - Eek!

This is the face of someone who has done their very first wardrobe edit! The person in question was a mum friend from school who had seen my offer of free styling for my first few guinea pigs a couple of weeks ago. A week or so before the edit, I asked her to l ook at people on Instagram/Pintrest/famous people, who’s style she aspired to, so I could get an idea of what she liked and didn’t like. I also did some of my own homework and wrote some notes on different body types and skin tones, so I felt a little more prepared. On the day I was the perfect combination of excited and scared and, I have to admit, when I was driving there I had no idea how I was going to do the actual wardrobe edit! In my usual style I went with winging it 😉 It made it a lot easier that my first client was a friend, as we were able to have a chat and a catch up beforehand. After that we discussed the style that she liked by going through what she had prepared so I had a better understanding of what she wanted...

Not the post I planned

I was going to write a blog about exercise and how that helps me feel better about myself and have some lovely outfit ideas/pics etc etc, but that’s not where I’m at or what I’ve been doing this week and I wanted this blog to be about my journey to becoming/being a personal stylist. To be honest I’ve found this week pretty difficult, I’ve had a lot of self-doubt about myself and my abilities as a stylist. That coupled with the most awful cold I’ve had in ages means I’ve done very little, hence why this blog is a day late. It’s difficult when you start doubting yourself, you wonder if you’ve made the right choice, if maybe you should back out of your decision as that’s the easy thing to do. I feel confident in my style and what I like, but will I be able to help other people do the same? I’ve never really done any of this, so it’s all very new and a little scary! When that seed of doubt is in there, I personally become less productive and procrastinate a hell of a lot (I do that a l...

That Warm Fuzzy Feeling

I’ve always found immense joy in finding things that people love, shopping for the perfect gift for someone’s birthday or Christmas and the excitement of watching them open it and (hopefully) liking what I have bought them. This love of finding things for people was perfect for when I worked in retail. I worked in a beautiful jewellery shop (Tyler Jenkins in Swansea) which was such a great place to work, as they let me use my creative side by allowing me to design some of the displays and I ended up knowing what was in the whole store! If people came in looking for ideas of what to get someone, I would ask them a few questions about who the gift was for and go around the shop pulling different things out for them to look at, mostly it was items they hadn’t even noticed. I also worked in a clothes shop (selling the Bench, Hooch etc) in Cardiff, where the womenswear section was in the basement, so mostly you were on your own down there. When customers came downstairs, I couldn’t help c...

Styling Confidence

I’ve never been very confident. I was a super shy kid and blushed if anyone talked to me directly, but I gradually got to a point where I could fake confidence to a certain level (although on the inside I was still that shy girl, overthinking everything I said!). Clothes definitely helped me feel more confident and the more I got to know what suited me, or what made me happy, the more confident I felt. When I had my first child I lost a lot of that confidence and a LOT of style. I couldn’t really afford a lot of maternity clothes at the time, so had to stick with the basics and some very questionable hand-me-downs! But it was the post baby, officially new mum stage that was the hardest.   My only decent maternity wear was for work, but that was now not practical or comfortable for dealing with baby puke and nappies. To be honest in the beginning it was a miracle if I made it out of pjs! I remember going for a coffee up with a fellow new mum I’d just met for the first time, it fel...
