Upping My Game

Been a bit crap this last couple of weeks and not written anything for this blog. My apologies, but I’m back now!

So, I’ve done a few wardrobe edits for friends, but last week I had my first ‘proper client’. While it was super exciting, I realised that I needed to up my game with my presentation both before the wardrobe edit and after when I send my recommendations for additional items to complement their wardrobe.

I needed to get out of the ‘winging it’ approach, so I did a little more research into how to prep for the edit, getting the client to get rid of definite no’s beforehand, what they need to wear on the day, minimal make up, having a mirror ready etc. Which is great because you are already saving them money by not wasting time getting things ready when you are there.

I’m pretty confident with my styling, but I did just have a re-read of my notes on body shapes and what suits/flatters, as well as colour tones. After all I was still a bit nervous about doing this for someone I haven’t met before!

I needn’t have worried though, as my client was absolutely lovely and had amazing clothes (I was slightly jealous of her wardrobe). She just needed a bit more confidence in how to wear certain items and putting outfits together. We managed to incorporate a couple of items she hadn’t worn but wanted to into her daily outfits and we also got rid of quite a few things that just weren’t working in either fit or colour.

The main area that I needed to work on was my presentation of the clothes that I thought would help elevate their wardrobe, so I enlisted the help of my friend Helen (super successful lady who has business as a wellness coach and previously had a wedding planning business.

Helen recommend getting myself a logo, Esty being a great choice for cheap ones and suggested I use an app called Canva to put my outfit recommendations into a format that would fit my logo. Thankfully I was able to do a logo on the Canva app that fitted in with style I was looking for and I’m able to carry that style through to the wardrobe additions, all of which is FREE! Great for keeping my costs down while things get started.

Another great suggestion was giving the personal touch to the service, a little note to the client to say how much I appreciated their business. Things like that make all the difference, as it is such a personal business, you get to know people while you are styling them, you have to to make sure you pick the right clothes for them.

While it’s still not perfect, I feel I’m on the right track with progressing my business.

Ooh also in other news, I’ve managed to get a part-time job that I can do alongside Personal Styling business while I’m building it up. Plus it will help with my clothing and now redecorating the house fund 😉

The Toughest Week

So I usually post on a Sunday and I had something all written out, but after I got the hubby to check it over (like I usually do) he said it seemed a bit more random than my usual stuff. I think the reason for that was because I normally write about what's happened to me that week and this one was different, so I've scrapped it for now and written about what's really been going on. If you’ve read my blog from the start you’ll know that I lost my job at the beginning of lockdown, I believed I was unfairly dismissed and I’ve been dealing with the fallout from this since April last year. I had to to hire a solicitor, it went to ACAS (a kind of mediation service that you have to go through to try and resolve the issue) and then finally to tribunal, which I had over 2 days last week. It’s been a very tough 9+ months and I’ve documented some of my struggles on here, albeit without much detail. But the last few months and especially this last week have been the hardest. My anxie...

Wardrobe Edit - Forgot to post this!!

So this week (actaully early Sept as I completely forgot to post this blog) I did the wardrobe edit for a lovely new client, who wasn’t happy with her wardrobe at all and wanted to feel more confident in herself and what to wear. We went through all of the items in her wardrobe, getting her to try them on and discussed how the fit was or wasn’t working for her body shape. She had fallen into the trap of wearing baggy clothes to hide the parts she didn’t like, however this just gives the illusion of making you bigger than you are. Once I had pointed out what this was doing to her shape and how she looked, we went through the clothes so quickly as she now knew what to look for and we got rid of a LOT of clothes!! Knowing how to dress for your shape can make all the difference, you might think you are hiding your problem areas, but you could be making the area more obvious. By accentuating your best features you are already drawing attention away from the areas you feel less happy...

That Warm Fuzzy Feeling

I’ve always found immense joy in finding things that people love, shopping for the perfect gift for someone’s birthday or Christmas and the excitement of watching them open it and (hopefully) liking what I have bought them. This love of finding things for people was perfect for when I worked in retail. I worked in a beautiful jewellery shop (Tyler Jenkins in Swansea) which was such a great place to work, as they let me use my creative side by allowing me to design some of the displays and I ended up knowing what was in the whole store! If people came in looking for ideas of what to get someone, I would ask them a few questions about who the gift was for and go around the shop pulling different things out for them to look at, mostly it was items they hadn’t even noticed. I also worked in a clothes shop (selling the Bench, Hooch etc) in Cardiff, where the womenswear section was in the basement, so mostly you were on your own down there. When customers came downstairs, I couldn’t help c...
