Spring/Summer 2021 - Using Your Current Wardrobe

There's currently lots of talk about Spring/Summer trends for 2021. Especially at the moment, as it brings with it with hope of brighter things to come.

New trends can be exciting, a chance to try new things, put new outfits together and add to our wardrobe. With these new style trends, it can be tempting to buy things that are fashionable, but don't necessarily fit in with your current style. This could lead to you only wearing the items a couple of times and then it getting left in your wardrobe. You could even end up buying something similar to what you already have, because it's 'slightly' different. I've personally fallen into that trap a fair few times!

This year I'm trying to be more mindful with the clothes that I buy, not to fall into the trap of buying 'Fast Fashion' but instead invest in pieces that are going to elevate my wardrobe. That being said, it doesn't mean I'm not going to try and use some of the ideas from the catwalks in my day to day wear.

Previously I've used influencers pictures as inspiration for outfits to wear using my current wardrobe, this time I'm going to pick some trends that are key for the coming seasons and seeing what I already have in my wardrobe that will fit the bill. Here are some of the trends and ideas of how I'm going to wear them.

Stripes

Who doesn't love a stripe! And this year its all the colours and sizes. I feel like I could have more stripes in my wardrobe, but for now here's a simple outfit that I think most people would be able to put together with what you already have. Plus I love leopard print and stripes together and contrary to what people think, anyone can wear stripes!

Monochrome

I don't know anyone that wouldn't have at least one item of black and/or white clothing. Here's a couple of options that I came up with, but I could have done so many more.

Maxi Dresses

Time to get those unworn bridesmaid/wedding guest dresses out of the cupboard and put them to good use! Keep it light and floaty with this trend.

Wide Leg Trouser

I'm such a fan of wide leg trousers, I was on the hunt for ages for the perfect pair after seeing Jodie Comer as Villanelle in a pair with a flannel shirt. Thankfully, I managed to find the perfect pair (although I did have to get them altered as they were super long) and I LOVE wearing them. Just be careful with proportions, I'm a more hourglass figure and look better when the top is a slimmer fit to show off my waist.

Sequins

Time to take the kitchen disco outside! I feel like a lot of these trends are making up for the crap time we've had of it by making us feel special, like wearing you're sequin skirt to do the school run (something I actually did when I said my daughter could dress me for the day!).

Trench Coat

Personally I think a good trench coat is a great investment for anyone's wardrobe, I've had mine for years and whenever I put it on I feel more put together. On this occasion I've made it a bit more casual, which works too.

Oversized Shirt

Looks like it's the bigger the better. I actually used my husbands work shirt for this photo. Plus it also fits in with another trend of pastel colours.

Belts

Obviously they never really go out of fashion, but the belt around your waist is back and personally I'm all for it as its great at accentuating your shape. You can use it on your wide leg trousers, over your oversized jackets, pretty much anything.

Big Jeans

Not for everyone, as it can drown you're shape or make you look bigger than you are. Personally it called to my love of the 90's. I've teamed mine with a belt, to help create shape and a tighter fitting top to give me better proportions.

Bold Flowers

Again, the bolder the better! Up until recently I hardly ever wore anything flowery, apart from to a wedding. However I'm loving it for bringing more colour in my wardrobe. If you're looking to get a bold print, just make sure the size, colour and pattern work for you and your shape.

Other trends that you might want to consider when looking at your wardrobe is Tie dye (love that this isn't going away, it makes me so happy with all the colours), corsets (you can go as bold or demure as you like!), low key luxe (think work outfit or nice dress with bomber jacket or hoodie), bold shoulders (not suitable for me as I'm quite broad), anything khaki, cut out details around the top half or midriff flossing (basically cord or wrap around details around your waist).

There's so many things to choose from, I have no doubt that you'll be able to something you can put together from your wardrobe. It may even give an old item a new lease of life.

As always, all items are things I already had in my wardrobe, apart from the dogtooth shaket in the monochrome section.

I hope you enjoyed this one, I certainly enjoyed the dress up session.

The Toughest Week

So I usually post on a Sunday and I had something all written out, but after I got the hubby to check it over (like I usually do) he said it seemed a bit more random than my usual stuff. I think the reason for that was because I normally write about what's happened to me that week and this one was different, so I've scrapped it for now and written about what's really been going on. If you’ve read my blog from the start you’ll know that I lost my job at the beginning of lockdown, I believed I was unfairly dismissed and I’ve been dealing with the fallout from this since April last year. I had to to hire a solicitor, it went to ACAS (a kind of mediation service that you have to go through to try and resolve the issue) and then finally to tribunal, which I had over 2 days last week. It’s been a very tough 9+ months and I’ve documented some of my struggles on here, albeit without much detail. But the last few months and especially this last week have been the hardest. My anxie...

Wardrobe Edit - Forgot to post this!!

So this week (actaully early Sept as I completely forgot to post this blog) I did the wardrobe edit for a lovely new client, who wasn’t happy with her wardrobe at all and wanted to feel more confident in herself and what to wear. We went through all of the items in her wardrobe, getting her to try them on and discussed how the fit was or wasn’t working for her body shape. She had fallen into the trap of wearing baggy clothes to hide the parts she didn’t like, however this just gives the illusion of making you bigger than you are. Once I had pointed out what this was doing to her shape and how she looked, we went through the clothes so quickly as she now knew what to look for and we got rid of a LOT of clothes!! Knowing how to dress for your shape can make all the difference, you might think you are hiding your problem areas, but you could be making the area more obvious. By accentuating your best features you are already drawing attention away from the areas you feel less happy...

That Warm Fuzzy Feeling

I’ve always found immense joy in finding things that people love, shopping for the perfect gift for someone’s birthday or Christmas and the excitement of watching them open it and (hopefully) liking what I have bought them. This love of finding things for people was perfect for when I worked in retail. I worked in a beautiful jewellery shop (Tyler Jenkins in Swansea) which was such a great place to work, as they let me use my creative side by allowing me to design some of the displays and I ended up knowing what was in the whole store! If people came in looking for ideas of what to get someone, I would ask them a few questions about who the gift was for and go around the shop pulling different things out for them to look at, mostly it was items they hadn’t even noticed. I also worked in a clothes shop (selling the Bench, Hooch etc) in Cardiff, where the womenswear section was in the basement, so mostly you were on your own down there. When customers came downstairs, I couldn’t help c...
