What's Helping My Happiness

As mentioned before, I've found that exercise has really helped with boosting my mood and making me feel physically and mentally stronger, but I also wanted to go into what else I’ve done to help. I’ve been meaning to write about this for a while, but my blogs are quite organic as to what I write each week.

I’ve been making a real effort to spend my time more productively I’ve been reading more in the evenings before bed. This has a two-fold effect of not looking at my phone before I go to sleep, which in turn helps me sleep better. I’m currently reading Untamed by Glennon Doyle and it’s certainly make me think about lots of different things in my life, definitely worth a read!

Using my artistic skills and trying to do more painting (I actually studied art and did a sculpture degree) has also been a focus, mostly watercolour for the moment as it’s quite quick to do. But I might try using some of my fancy felt tip pens I bought a few years ago and see what else I can do. I think the kids will be getting LOT’s of pictures for their rooms!

Anyway, the main thing I wanted to talk about was the fact that I’ve been listening to podcast, well one particular podcast to be precise. How to Fail with Elizabeth Day has helped me through a lot. It may sound like a funny title, but it’s the most uplifting podcast I’ve listened too (admittedly I haven’t listened to many). Elizabeth Day talks to various people from Phoebe Waller-Bridge to Andy McNab and Lily Allen and asks them about three of their failures, ranging from failing at driving to being a heroin addict, and how they learnt from them, which ultimately lead to positive things in their life. Listening to these podcasts have made me want to read more books (always a good thing), laugh out loud at some of the funny stories and cry my eyes. It’s incredibly thought provoking and has provided a very welcome distraction from my own negative thoughts. I love this podcast so much, that I’m constantly singing it’s praises to anyone who will listen, so I apologise now if I’ve already talked your ear off about it.

I would love to know if there are any podcasts that you recommend, as mentioned I’m fairly new to the podcast game so any ideas of what else to listen to would be gratefully received.

On a side (styling) note, I’ve ordered a few things off the mango sale that I’ll be showing you on insta stories this week. I know, I know, I’ve succumbed to the ‘need to buy’ and I’m annoyed about that, but I’ll only keep them if I’m 100% happy with them.

Hope you all have a wonderful week ahead.

The Toughest Week

So I usually post on a Sunday and I had something all written out, but after I got the hubby to check it over (like I usually do) he said it seemed a bit more random than my usual stuff. I think the reason for that was because I normally write about what's happened to me that week and this one was different, so I've scrapped it for now and written about what's really been going on. If you’ve read my blog from the start you’ll know that I lost my job at the beginning of lockdown, I believed I was unfairly dismissed and I’ve been dealing with the fallout from this since April last year. I had to to hire a solicitor, it went to ACAS (a kind of mediation service that you have to go through to try and resolve the issue) and then finally to tribunal, which I had over 2 days last week. It’s been a very tough 9+ months and I’ve documented some of my struggles on here, albeit without much detail. But the last few months and especially this last week have been the hardest. My anxie...

Wardrobe Edit - Forgot to post this!!

So this week (actaully early Sept as I completely forgot to post this blog) I did the wardrobe edit for a lovely new client, who wasn’t happy with her wardrobe at all and wanted to feel more confident in herself and what to wear. We went through all of the items in her wardrobe, getting her to try them on and discussed how the fit was or wasn’t working for her body shape. She had fallen into the trap of wearing baggy clothes to hide the parts she didn’t like, however this just gives the illusion of making you bigger than you are. Once I had pointed out what this was doing to her shape and how she looked, we went through the clothes so quickly as she now knew what to look for and we got rid of a LOT of clothes!! Knowing how to dress for your shape can make all the difference, you might think you are hiding your problem areas, but you could be making the area more obvious. By accentuating your best features you are already drawing attention away from the areas you feel less happy...

That Warm Fuzzy Feeling

I’ve always found immense joy in finding things that people love, shopping for the perfect gift for someone’s birthday or Christmas and the excitement of watching them open it and (hopefully) liking what I have bought them. This love of finding things for people was perfect for when I worked in retail. I worked in a beautiful jewellery shop (Tyler Jenkins in Swansea) which was such a great place to work, as they let me use my creative side by allowing me to design some of the displays and I ended up knowing what was in the whole store! If people came in looking for ideas of what to get someone, I would ask them a few questions about who the gift was for and go around the shop pulling different things out for them to look at, mostly it was items they hadn’t even noticed. I also worked in a clothes shop (selling the Bench, Hooch etc) in Cardiff, where the womenswear section was in the basement, so mostly you were on your own down there. When customers came downstairs, I couldn’t help c...
