The ‘NEED’ to Buy

One thing I’ve found with all my time spent scrolling Instagram over the last 9 months+ is that I’ve felt or feel the ‘need’ to buy stuff, or maybe it’s just me? It’s constantly on your feed, the clothes people are wearing, what they are using to decorate their houses, you look at what they have, and you want it for yourself. I’m constantly seeing a lot of the influencers with similar items and think to myself, I must have that in my wardrobe! Maybe to feel like you are living part of their life that seems so perfect, maybe it’s that instant buzz that buying something gives you or maybe you feel the need to keep up with the instant trends/fashion.

Doing my daily outfit posts, I’ve certainly felt the pressure to have new things to show people, to stay current and fashionable. Over lockdown and beyond I’ve been ordering new things, not necessarily keeping all of it, but I’ve certainly kept a few. However, the pressure to be up to date and fashionable is simply not viable for me at the moment, but it also is just not me and hasn’t been sitting right with me for a while. I’ve never been one for constantly keep up to date with fashions, instead I’d just buy the things I liked.

Do you ever find yourself ordering something, only to find something similar in your wardrobe? I’ve done it so much due to laziness of not bothering to go through my wardrobe or feeling like this version was better, so I needed it to replace the one I already have. Most of the time I’ve bought something that I don’t actually need, but it was something I wanted and those are two very different things. If I’m being honest, I’m a big stress buyer – that instant gratification of getting something you want to forget your troubles and stresses, something to look forward to getting in the post. But the problem with that is, stresses remain and they are then joined with the guilt of spending money you don’t have.

My mum always says to me when we’re out shopping, ‘do you need it? Will you use it? Can you afford it?’ and if you can’t answer yes to all three then you shouldn’t buy it. I really need to pay more attention to this!

I need to stop worrying so much about having new stuff and focus on what works for me that I already have in my wardrobe, after all that’s what I do for my clients! So here’s to wearing what’s in your wardrobe and making it work for you. After all, fashion is cyclical and you probably have some real gems in there that are on trend right now.

Hope you all have a great week.

The Toughest Week

So I usually post on a Sunday and I had something all written out, but after I got the hubby to check it over (like I usually do) he said it seemed a bit more random than my usual stuff. I think the reason for that was because I normally write about what's happened to me that week and this one was different, so I've scrapped it for now and written about what's really been going on. If you’ve read my blog from the start you’ll know that I lost my job at the beginning of lockdown, I believed I was unfairly dismissed and I’ve been dealing with the fallout from this since April last year. I had to to hire a solicitor, it went to ACAS (a kind of mediation service that you have to go through to try and resolve the issue) and then finally to tribunal, which I had over 2 days last week. It’s been a very tough 9+ months and I’ve documented some of my struggles on here, albeit without much detail. But the last few months and especially this last week have been the hardest. My anxie...

Wardrobe Edit - Forgot to post this!!

So this week (actaully early Sept as I completely forgot to post this blog) I did the wardrobe edit for a lovely new client, who wasn’t happy with her wardrobe at all and wanted to feel more confident in herself and what to wear. We went through all of the items in her wardrobe, getting her to try them on and discussed how the fit was or wasn’t working for her body shape. She had fallen into the trap of wearing baggy clothes to hide the parts she didn’t like, however this just gives the illusion of making you bigger than you are. Once I had pointed out what this was doing to her shape and how she looked, we went through the clothes so quickly as she now knew what to look for and we got rid of a LOT of clothes!! Knowing how to dress for your shape can make all the difference, you might think you are hiding your problem areas, but you could be making the area more obvious. By accentuating your best features you are already drawing attention away from the areas you feel less happy...

That Warm Fuzzy Feeling

I’ve always found immense joy in finding things that people love, shopping for the perfect gift for someone’s birthday or Christmas and the excitement of watching them open it and (hopefully) liking what I have bought them. This love of finding things for people was perfect for when I worked in retail. I worked in a beautiful jewellery shop (Tyler Jenkins in Swansea) which was such a great place to work, as they let me use my creative side by allowing me to design some of the displays and I ended up knowing what was in the whole store! If people came in looking for ideas of what to get someone, I would ask them a few questions about who the gift was for and go around the shop pulling different things out for them to look at, mostly it was items they hadn’t even noticed. I also worked in a clothes shop (selling the Bench, Hooch etc) in Cardiff, where the womenswear section was in the basement, so mostly you were on your own down there. When customers came downstairs, I couldn’t help c...
